DM&IR 163 had its nose chopped in April 1971 after an accident on Proctor Hill. Along with 186 it was somewhat of a precursor to the SDM program that would start a decade later. Here, 163 is shown with sister 162 coasting along the mainline through Wilpen on the Superior Branch between Keenan and Mitchell (Hibbing) on September 22, 1986. The cars at left are likely empties staged for the nearby mines on the Chisholm Branch. Steve Lorenz photo.
